Shelter Network was founded in 1987 to address the growing problem of homelessness in the San Francisco Bay Area. Escalating rents and extremely low vacancies have created a housing crisis in San Mateo County, where an estimated 5,000 men, women, and children become homeless each year. Most of these individuals are formerly self-sufficient members of the community: over 50% of the families served by Shelter Network have never been homeless before, and more than half of the adults are still employed when they enter Shelter Network s programs. Tragically, more than one third of the people served by Shelter Network are children, who are often most deeply affected by an episode of homelessness.
